The film EO (2022) is the story about the life and adventures of a donkey from a Polish circus. The movie was directed by Jerzy Skolimowski and Ewa Piaskowska. After the first American screening at “The Film at Lincoln Center,” The directors said that they used five different donkeys to film the different scenes. Skolimowski mentioned that the film, that he was inspired to make EO after he saw the movie Balthazar, right after he graduated from film school in Poland. He said he cried when Baltazar died at the end of the movie.
Au Hasard Balthazar, (1966) directed by Robert Bresson, was filmed in the Pyrenees. Balthazar is a black and white movie beautifully shot. Critics wrote that Bresson was inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s book “The Idiot,” (1868). The protagonist in the Idiot, had something about the innocence and nobility that the donkey also had in the Balthazar’s film.
As part of my research, I am looking into Skolimowski’s “non-linear” thinking in making the script for EO. I am also interested in creating a series of donkey drawings with pen and ink. I would like to get the big eyes, with a feeling of EO’s spirit within.
